Story: Franky Lafayette grew up in Indigo City with his mother. His father Carmine Carbone was a gangster who visited her on occasion [2]. His best friend from the early days was Johnny Apollo; the two was a couple of hoodlums getting into trouble as they got older [3]. They went on to have a career in crime as partners, but Apollo eventually betrayed Franky and his father, an tried to kill them [4].

Neither Franky nor Carbone died, and Franky wanted revenge. The war between the two ended with a big fight and a big explosion where Johnny Apollo supposedly died, and Franky was saved by Rockefeller Patel (Rocky) who found him and nursed him back to health [1,5].

Being believed dead, Franky saw this as an opportunity to take on a new adventure, with a new name [1]. He did run into Johnny Apollo one final time and Apollo was finally killed [6].


Equipment: Greyshirt wears a chain mail suit under his clothes, and a walking cane containing a rope which he can shoot from the cane to ascend walls etc.

Background notes: The stories about the Grayshirt ran in the anthology series Alan Moore's Tomorrow Stories as one of four series paying homage to classical comics. This particular series was a nod to Will Eisner's Spirit, complete with many of the visuals used in the classic stories. Contrary to the other series in Tomorrow Stories, Greyshirt was very close to the original idea with the drama and the characters being the main focus and like the Spirit stories; Greyshirt wasn't always one of the main characters in the stories.

Taking place in Indigo City like the Cobweb stories, the Greyshirt had some interaction with the Cobweb, but only in the Greyshirt stories, and with Alan Moore's use of mature elements, the interaction was often sexual in nature.
