Story: When Chapel killed himself to become a hellspawn, he ended up as Lucifers soldier. Chapel was very good at his job and eventually developed into Lord Chapel who took over as leader of Hell [3].

Lucifer had to escape from Hell and went to Earth, Washington DC in 1980 to be more exact. Here he took the form of Alexander Graves and planned his eventual return to power as the rightful ruler of Hell [1].

Lucifer returned to Hell to face Lord Chapel who had exiled him. With New Man he succeeded in slaying Lord Chapel [1]. Chapel was returned to Earth and he reclaimed his leadership of Hell. It has not been revealed how, but Lucifer returned to Earth as Graves a few years later [2].
