Story: Garth Ranzz along with the rest of batch SW6 was the result of a genetic experiment by the Dominion working for Earthgov. A detonation in the atmosphere above Metropolis opened the pods where SW6 were held and the legionnaires found themselves lying naked on the floor believing they were 17 years in the future [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #24+25].

While trying to figure out what had happened, they were found by the reporter Devlin O'Ryan, who took them outside and tried to fill them in on what had happened in the time they were missing [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #25]. At the time, the Dominion was starting an invasion on Earth, and the SW6 batch started fighting them along with the rebels [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #27]. The Dominion was defeated [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #35], but at the loss of three of the SW6 legionnaires [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #32].

Brainiac 5 was unable to find out which one of the teams that was the original heroes and which ones were the clones, and seeing that the SW6 batch needed to get on with their lives, the Legion helped the SW6 batch forming a new Legion of Super-Heroes in the old Legion's clubhouse. The new legionnaires called themselves The Legionnaires and Garth Ranzz took the name Live Wire [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #41].

Background notes: The SW6 version of Garth Ranzz shows one of the continuity goofs when the SW6 heroes were changed from genetic experiments to time displaced heroes. One of the things Garth Ranzz notes is that he's got his right arm back, which in the claimed continuity happened long before they were supposed to be taken by Glorith. Also in this continuity, Garth Ranzz was never revived while Chameleon's pet Proty died. Here Proty survived and took the identity of Garth Ranzz, a story that took place long before Glorith supposedly took the Legionnaires from the time stream. This would have made Garth Ranzz of the SW6 a Protean which was never indicated anywhere in the series.
